about the festivals..
To date the 14 Circus Fests have been a celebration of our contemporary circus culture. Performers from around the planet have contributed to and benefited from the spirit of exploration, skill sharing and creative risk taking that is engendered in each festival. Seasoned performers, emerging artists, young people and those looking to embark on new adventures in self expression come together for an intensive training period and then cap it all off with a celebratory 3 days and nights of non-stop performance when the festival opens to the public.
The first Circus Fest took place in Tasmania at Lone Star, Golconda. Subsequent festivals were set up in different parts of Australia - Stradbroke Island, Albury, Rottnest Island and Mullumbimby- to enable more people to experience this stimulating and provocative event. In between, the festival returned to Golconda and the beautiful surroundings of the Panama Forest.Another feature of the festival is the provision of a receptive environment for creating and experimenting. During the training period a number new groups and acts (both physical and musical) develop and evolve. Some of these exist only during the festival and others have gone on to become new companies.
